Do You Suffer From Headaches?

Reduce Tech Time

We live in a time where we are constantly connected to our phone, laptop/computer or television. This puts an immense amount of pressure on your neck since people typically look down (cervical flexion) when they are on these devices. That’s too much pressure on your spine day in and day out when we are in cervical flexion. This is a huge contributing factor to why individuals suffer from headaches.

Now I know what you’re thinking.. That’s great but I work at a computer or I use my phone for work.. I can’t stop working.. Trust me, I get it. I’m in the same boat. One way to counter the effects of tech time is to do extension and postural exercises every couple hours when you are at work. It only takes a couple minutes and it can stop the pesky headaches, so you can focus on what really matters.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Instead of reaching for another cup of coffee, ask yourself “Did you drink any water today?” Dehydration is another reason why people get headaches. Drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces of water will help you stay hydrated. For example, if you are 150 lbs. you should be drinking at least 75 ounces of water per day. Of course, if you are training for the Boston Marathon you should definitely be drinking more than that.

Rest With An Ice Pack

Let’s say it’s too late and you already have a headache. To help reduce the symptoms of headaches lay on your back and place an ice pack at the base of your neck for 15 minutes. This will help alleviate those symptoms and get you back on your feet. This is also a great time to help your body rest and destress from whatever craziness the day brings. Focus on your breathing and enjoy the 15 min of peace and quiet (no technology during this time.. Remember step 1? 😉)

***Bonus Tip***

Make sure to visit your Chiropractor!! Chiropractic has been shown to reduce headaches and help prevent the recurrence of them. Your chiropractor will focus on the root cause of these symptoms and come up with a plan to correct the problem. Typically, the problem will root from the upper neck. With consistent chiropractic adjustments the pressure can be removed, and headaches will be significantly improved!
